Volunteer Firefighter Richard H. Freeman was one of three volunteer firefighters from the Palatine Fire Department who were killed on February 23, 1973, while trying to extinguish a blaze in downtown Palatine, Illinois.

On February 23, 1973, John Wilson, Warren Ahlgrim, and Richard Freeman of the Palatine Fire Department lost their lives while battling a fire at the Ben Franklin Variety Store in downtown Palatine. Wilson, who also owned the store, responded alongside Ahlgrim and Freeman as the blaze spread rapidly from the basement through the building in the early morning hours.

On February 23, 2026, 53 years after the incident, a remembrance ceremony was held at the Palatine Firefighters Memorial in downtown Palatine, honoring the sacrifice of three volunteer firefighters who gave their lives in service. At the base of the memorial, the helmets and jackets of Firefighters John T. Wilson, Warren H. Ahlgrim, and Richard H. Freeman were displayed as a quiet, powerful tribute to their courage and commitment.

He was survived by his wife and two children.
