Trooper Chong Soo Lim served with the Illinois State Police for five years. A proud graduate of the Illinois State Police Academy, he began his career in District 3, patrolling the city of Chicago. Just one month before his passing, Trooper Lim transferred to the midnight shift in District 15, Oak Brook, where he continued to serve with dedication and integrity.
On June 6, 1995, while conducting a routine traffic stop on I-90 near Hoffman Estates, Trooper Lim was tragically killed when his squad car was struck from behind by a pickup truck. The impact forced his vehicle into the car in front of him, causing a gas tank explosion that trapped Trooper Lim inside. He was 29 years old.
The driver of the pickup truck was found to be under the influence and was later convicted of manslaughter in connection to Trooper Lim’s death.
Trooper Lim was born in South Korea and is remembered as a dedicated public servant with a strong sense of duty. He is survived by his wife.
To honor his legacy, the Asian American Law Enforcement Association established the Trooper Chong Soo Lim Scholarship Award. Presented annually to both community members and families of active AALEA members, the award reflects Trooper Lim’s commitment to service and his lasting impact on others.
In 1996, Illinois State Police District 15 dedicated its operations area in memory of Trooper Lim—a tribute to the life and service of a trooper gone too soon, but never forgotten.
