Sgt. Michael Garner, 48, a narcotics officer with the Chicago Police Department who had served for 20 years, died Saturday. Sgt. Garner, who had held that rank for nine years, was shot in West Englewood while off-duty. He was a dedicated police officer who was proud of his work fighting gangs and drugs, said his cousin, Dwayn Garner. Sgt. Garner, a U.S. Army veteran, still served in the Army Reserves.

A native of Chicago, Sgt. Garner lived in the West Pullman neighborhood with his wife, Rochelle. He also is survived by a son, Brian; daughter, Kim; his mother; three brothers; and a sister.

“He was a family man and he loved his work. He was really into his job.”
