Sergeant Gerald Doll was shot and killed during a traffic stop.

Sergeant Doll spotted a station wagon speeding north on Cicero Avenue and pursued the vehicle where it stopped at the corner of Shakespeare Avenue. As Sergeant Doll approached, the driver produced a gun and fired at point blank range. Sergeant Doll was fatally wounded in the attack. The gunman and his female companion then fled into an alley. Officer William Redden, who had joined the auto chase, followed the two shooting as he ran. He then returned to help Sergeant Doll.
