On the evening of June 5, 2025, officers from the Chicago Police Department’s 6th District Tactical Team attempted to stop a suspect near the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue. The suspect fled into a nearby residence, and officers pursued him inside. During a chaotic encounter, an officer discharged their weapon, fatally striking Officer Krystal Rivera.
Officer Rivera passed away later that evening at the University of Chicago Hospital. She is survived by her young daughter and family. Officer Rivera was 36 years old and had served with the Chicago Police Department for four years. During her career, she earned 38 Honorable Mentions, one Life Saving Award, one Superintendent’s Honorable Mention, one Police Officer of the Month Award, and the 2024 Democratic Convention Service Award.
Visitation for Officer Rivera will be held at Montclair Lucania Funeral Home (6901 W Belmont Ave.) on Tuesday, June 24.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 25 at Living Word Christian Center (7600 Roosevelt Rd) at 12:00 PM.
