On the evening of June 5, 2025, officers from the Chicago Police Department’s 6th District Tactical Team attempted to stop a suspect near the 8200 block of South Drexel Avenue. The suspect fled into a nearby residence, and officers pursued him inside. While inside, they encountered an armed individual.

Officer Krystal Rivera was shot during the incident and later passed away at the University of Chicago Hospital. She is survived by her young daughter and family. Officer Rivera was 36 years old and had been on the Chicago Police Department for four years.
