As a young man, Brian R. Shields began his career in journalism, working for the Aurora Beacon News. After a short time, he found his true calling in law enforcement, working with a smaller police force for a few years before joining the Aurora department at the age of 35.

Police Officer Brian Shields died on January 11, 2022 as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty.

Officer Shields had served with the Aurora Police Department for 16 years. He is survived by his wife and five children.
