Police Officer William J. Luce, 45, was a 20-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, assigned to the Special Operations Unit.
During firearms testing, Officer Luce was exposed to radiation when a scope dismantled from a gun. The radiation caused severe burns to his body and face. On August 14, 1989, Officer Luce died after a battle with cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; sons, Richard, Nick, and Brian; and daughters, Janet Lynn and Lisa. He was a Vietnam Veteran.
