On May 20, 1978, Chicago Police Patrolman James Edward O’Connell lost his life due to complications from quadruple bypass surgery following an on duty incident earlier that year. O’Connell suffered chest pain and shortness of breath after struggling with intoxicated and disorderly suspects while working the first watch in the 19th District on January 21, 1978.
Patrolman O’Connell was a 22 year veteran of the Chicago Police Department assigned to the 19th District – Belmont. He had joined the department on May 16, 1956, and was also a veteran of the Korean War, having served honorably in the Armed Forces.
Officer O’Connell was laid to rest on May 23, 1978, at St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery in Niles, Illinois.
James Edward O’Connell is survived by his wife, children, parents, and siblings.
