Officer Irwin Hayden was killed in a helicopter accident.

He was assigned to the traffic unit involved in providing traffic reports to local radio stations when the police helicopter suffered an airframe failure and crashed.

Officer Hayden had served with the Chicago Police Department for 23 years.
