Investigator Cuauhtemoc Estrada died on December 20th at the age of 50. Estrada was hosting a family party on the evening of the 20th when two armed men attempted to rob his daughter and her boyfriend in the adjacent parking lot. Estrada was fatally shot when he intervened. Because Investigator Estrada identified himself and because he was performing an act of law enforcement typical to his office, his death was classified as a line of duty death in early January.
He was transported to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Two suspects in connection with Investigator Estrada’s murder were apprehended two days later.
Investigator Estrada was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and had served with the Cook County Sheriff’s Office for 20 years.
He left behind four children and three grandchildren.
