“He had to know he was in trouble, but he wouldn’t change anything. Even though he’s gone, he would not change his life one bit. That’s the peace that we take away from this, that he died doing his heart’s desire” (Felicia Townsend, Plummer’s mother).

Firefighter MaShawn Plummer was critically injured in a deadly apartment fire in the 3100 block of North Marmora Avenue in Belmont Cragin on the Northwest Side early morning on December 16, 2021. A mayday was called but due to it being on the main/dispatch channel instead of the fireground channel, the first team of firefighters could not be ordered to conduct a search until minutes later.

Unfortunately, Plummer succumbed to his injuries on December 21. He had graduated from the Chicago Fire Academy six months prior.

Funeral held for Chicago firefighter who died from injuriesMashawn Jermaine Plummer - National Fallen Firefighters Foundation

Mashawn Plummer believed in service, in giving back to the community. He grew up in Englewood and was a football player, playing defensive lineman for Quincy University, where he majored in prelaw. He was the first person in his family to graduate college and his example helped pave the way for others in the family to follow in his footsteps, his mother said.

He is survived by his parents and siblings.

Our hearts are with the Plummer family and the Chicago Fire Department.
