Firefighter Martin M. Gillan was overcome with smoke inhalation while fighting a fire on December 27, 1971. Because of continued dizziness and heaviness in his chest, he was hospitalized. After several days, he succumbed to the smoke inhalation.

He was survived by his wife and eight children.
