On June 1, 1967, Battalion Chief John P. Spellman of the Chicago Fire Department’s 7th Battalion lost his life in the line of duty while responding to a multi-structure fire near the intersection of 17th Street and South Racine Avenue. The fire began in a garage and quickly spread to two adjacent apartment buildings, creating a rapidly escalating emergency.

After arriving on scene, Chief Spellman was assisting members of Truck Company 5 in placing a ground ladder when it came into contact with high-tension power lines. The aluminum ladder made contact and Chief Spellman was electrocuted. He collapsed at the scene and could not be revived.
