On December 23, 2021, Chicago Police Department Police Officer Jose Huerta died from complications as a result of contracting COVID-19 in the line of duty. Officer Huerta had served with the Chicago Police Department for 21 years and was assigned to the Gang Investigation Division with detail to the Alternate Response Section.

On November 19, 2021, Officer Huerta was on duty and fell ill but continued to work his shift. On November 24, 2021, Officer Huerta was placed on the “Medical Roll” for flu-like symptoms after he began experiencing minor symptoms of COVID-19 after testing positive for COVID-19. On November 29, 2021, with his symptoms worsening, he went to MacNeal Hospital located at 3249 South Oak Park Avenue, Berwyn, IL and was admitted for bilateral covid pneumonia and remained there until his death.

He is survived by his wife, son, daughter, and four siblings.
